A trip to Italy in August is filled with special events and festivities. Perhaps one of the most charming and fun is Ferragosta, or Assumption day, on August 15th, a national holiday particular to Italy.

While many stores and restaurants close for the day during Ferragost in Rome, you can join the city in a day of celebration when everyone becomes Italian for a day. This national holiday is full of fun activities, food, drink, and pageants.

Purists will want to start the day visiting Rome's most important religious points of interest, like St. Peter's Basilica, St. Mary Major and St. Paul Outside the Walls, reflecting on the city's religious heritage. Then, it is time to hit the streets where residents and visitor come to celebrate with vigor!

Throughout the day, spectators enjoy lively and colorful parades and processions as well as take part in many games. Different parts of the city hold dance performances, fireworks, historical pageants, and great music.  Ferragosta is famous for the food and wine, which is plentiful, and for the good cheer.
