Festa della Madonna della Neve
Celebrating a legendary snow fall and vision of the Virgin Mary which indicated where the church should be built, the Festa della Madonna della Neve honors the day annually with a spectacular shower of white rose petals from the dome of one of the most religiously significant churches in Rome.
According to long standing tradition held since the fourth century, every year on August fifth during the Festa della Madonna della Neve a shower of rose petals is thrown from the chapel of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome in a beautiful display of remembrance of the miracle that took place and in honor of the Virgin Mary. Faithful gather for the event as well as having additional celebrations within many of the local districts.
Just like the snow that blanked the ground marking where the church should be built, the white flower petals fall majestically and blanket the ground around the chapel. Once the petals are thrown, the crowds disperse and follow processionals back to their own municipality where further celebrations take place.
The processions are equally as beautiful, with those who have come to honor the day gathering and walking the winding roads carrying a statue of the Virgin Mary. Both beautiful and poignant, you will not want to miss a day that has been honored every year by the faithful since the fourth century.
