Top 3 Rome Outdoor Activities

Apr 19 , 2011

Rome offers a lot for visitors to do, including the chance to eat many delicious foods. If you (or your waistline) need to take a break from the culinary delights that the city has to offer, check out some of these equally fantastic Rome outdoor activities.

Head for the Ruins

Your search for Rome outdoor activities doesn't have to take you outside of the city. In fact, you'll be able to take in the sights and get a healthy dose of exercise. Purchase a pass to the Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, and Coliseum, and wander around these historic relics in the sunshine of the Roman sun. Climbing the Palatine Hill is a workout in itself, and you'll likely be at least a little short of breath by the time you reach the top.

You'll quickly forget about that, though, as you'll want to explore the Palatine Stadium and other ruins. A guided or self-directed tour of the Rome Coliseum is a great way to continue this Rome outdoor activity, and it is particularly great for hot summers, because tours are led through the welcoming shade and cooler temperatures of the depths of the site. In other cities, heading outdoors will likely mean venturing toward outlying areas. If you don't feel like veering out of the way, then Rome outdoor activities can be found right inside the city.

Enjoy a Soccer Game

Rome is home to not one, but two hometown soccer teams in AS Roma and Lazio Roma. These teams play in the ultra-competitive Italian Serie A, one of the premier European football federations. Both teams play at Stadio Olimpico, which can fit more than 78,000 cheering fans. If you can, get tickets to games when either team play other top Serie A squads, including the likes of Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Juventus.

While it may sound funto try to attend the cross-city rivalry game, soccer fans beware: you may find yourself in trouble with the fans if you cheer for the wrong team in the wrong section of the stands. If you're looking for sports in your Rome outdoor activity, a soccer game is an excellent choice.

Go to the Park

Romans appreciate their green spaces, and the city's parks are excellent. Check out the Villa Doria Pamphili, which is a 17th-century villa that has been transformed into the city's largest landscaped public park. It is located in the Monteverde neighborhood, which is near Trastevere and is a short bus ride from the Vatican. You'll find jogging paths, an eatery, open fields for sports, and many interesting buildings and statues. The park covers an expanse of nearly two square kilometers, and you'll be hard pressed to explore its ins and outs before you are exhausted. You may be just as happy to bring a picnic lunch and sit amongst the impressive trees, which look like they've been replanted from an African savanna.

If you want to get out there even further, consider a day trip from Rome.
